Ernst Stuhlinger (1913–2008) was a visionary physicist and pioneer of electric propulsion technology. A graduate of the University of Tübingen with a Ph.D. in cosmic ray physics, Stuhlinger joined the Peenemünde rocket program in 1943 after serving on the Russian front. Brought to the U.S. under Project Paperclip in 1946, he became a key figure in NASA’s space exploration efforts, serving as Director of the Research Projects Division at the Army Ballistic Missile Agency and later at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center.
Stuhlinger played a pivotal role in advancing space science as the Associate Director for Science at MSFC (1968–1976), contributing to landmark missions like Apollo. He also authored several works, including a biography of Wernher von Braun, and dedicated his post-retirement years to teaching and research at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. His groundbreaking work in electric propulsion laid the foundation for future interplanetary exploration.
