FZ-001 was a pioneering electrical engineer who made significant contributions to the development of rocket guidance systems. A graduate of the Thüringische Technische Staatslehranstalt in Hildburghausen with a Dipl. Ing. in Electrical Engineering (1930), FZ-001 began his work on early rocket technology at Kummersdorf in 1935 and later supported development efforts at Peenemünde. Brought to the U.S. under Project Paperclip in 1945, he served as Chief of Gyro and Stabilizer Laboratories at the Army Ballistic Missile Agency during the 1950s.
While not formally part of NASA, FZ-001’s work as a contractor for the Marshall Space Flight Center included contributions to the Saturn vehicle program. He retired in 1977 after a distinguished career, leaving a legacy of innovation in aerospace engineering. His widow, Ursula Mueller, honored his memory by establishing scholarships at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, ensuring his contributions continue to inspire future generations.
