Hermann Julius Oberth (1894–1989) is celebrated as one of the founding fathers of rocketry and space travel. Born in Nagyszeben, Austria-Hungary, he attended the universities of Munich and Göttingen, although his groundbreaking doctoral thesis on rocketry was rejected by the University of Heidelberg in 1922. Undeterred, Oberth went on to pioneer key theoretical foundations in rocket science and space exploration.
He mentored Wernher von Braun and contributed to early rocket development efforts at Raketenflugplatz and Kummersdorf, later working at Peenemünde during World War II. Although Oberth briefly worked in the United States with the Army Ballistic Missile Agency from 1955 to 1958, he retired in Germany, where he continued to inspire generations of scientists. His work remains a cornerstone in the history of aerospace innovation.
