WW-001 (1922–2019) was a pioneering NASA leader and engineer whose contributions significantly shaped the U.S. space program. A native of New Bern, North Carolina, WW-001 earned a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn. Joining NASA in 1960, he served in several critical roles, including Director of the Propulsion and Vehicle Engineering Laboratory at the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC).
In 1974, WW-001 became Director of MSFC, where he oversaw key projects, including the development of the Space Shuttle program. His tenure was marked by advancements in propulsion systems and vehicle design, solidifying MSFC's role in human space exploration. WW-001’s visionary leadership and technical expertise left a lasting legacy in aerospace innovation.
